Castor canadensis
The American Beavers are our local engineers, building dams along our rivers. Beavers exhibit colors of dark to reddish brown. They have small eyes and large heads. They are aquatic, with flat, paddle-shaped tails that assist in swimming. They build dams all over the watershed adding complexity to wetlands of various types. They reach a weight of 18 kg and grow to nearly 1 meter in length, making them the largest native rodent in the watershed.
Due to a unique adaptation that allows them to gnaw on wood continuously, Beavers teeth never stop growing. The constant wear of chewing down wood, keeps them sharp and is essential for their survival.
