Wildlife
Friends of Blackwater protects the endangered species of West Virginia through research, education and litigation. We advocate for the West Virginia northern flying squirrel, the Cheat mountain salamander, the Indiana bat and the Virginia big-eared bat who all call Blackwater Canyon home. We have protected 1,400 acres of Cheat snail habitat in the Cheat River Canyon and are pushing to have the little brown bat added to the endangered species list to prevent its extinction from the deadly White Nose syndrome disease.
